Founded 140 years ago, and located in the heart of Canada, the University of Manitoba (U of M) is the region’s largest research-intensive and only medical doctoral university. Here, 29,000-plus students pursue more than 100 programs, including graduate studies. Over 16 per cent of U of M students are international, representing close to 100 countries and contributing to the cultural diversity of Winnipeg, Manitoba, known for its welcoming, urban community.

The English Language Centre (ELC) offers many supports and services to help students adjust to their new home and study life. The popular Homestay Program, for example, gives you the opportunity to live in a Canadian home, practice English and experience local culture. The program starts as soon as you get off the plane with the homestay host picking you up at the airport and taking you to your new safe and comfortable home-away-from-home.

The Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) helps international students improve their Academic English, and prepare them for academic success. The IAEP also helps international students apply for their Manitoba Health Insurance card and connects them with important resources on campus.

IAEP students have access to the Student Life Program (social, sport, and cultural events and field trips), the Language Partner Volunteer Program (practice English skills and learn about Canadian culture with community volunteers) and the Socio-Cultural Training Program (navigating cultural interactions and communication).
