Learn the English Language Skills You Need to Succeed in Canada

Do you want to improve your English language skills so you can pursue post-secondary studies or expand your career prospects in Canada?

The Language Education for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta is designed to help you succeed with immersive learning, experienced instructors, and a supportive campus community.

What is LEAP?

LEAP at Mount Royal provides high-quality English language instruction taught by certified instructors. It is accredited by Languages Canada and covers all the important aspects of English proficiency in academic and career settings. You will develop language skills in reading, listening, writing, and speaking, which will help improve both your accuracy and fluency. After graduating the program, you will be well prepared to pursue post-secondary education or advance your career.

There are four levels of LEAP ranging from low, through intermediate, to advanced. Your starting level is determined by an English language proficiency placement test, ensuring that you start in the right class for your current skill level. While there is no official requirement to apply for LEAP, it is recommended you have a language level of CLB 4 or an IELTS score of 3.5.

How the LEAP program works

The overall length of the program depends on your starting level. If you begin at LEAP 1, it will take approximately 15 months (four 13-week terms) to complete. This structured time frame allows for a focused and progressive learning experience.

Once you have progressed through each level and completed LEAP 4, you will meet MRU's English language proficiency requirement and can apply for degree, diploma, and certificate programs. Plus, LEAP follows a university-style delivery model with multiple instructors, so you'll be prepared to make a smooth transition into credit programs at Mount Royal.

Personalized learning in small classes

The LEAP courses are innovative in their structure. For example, one course focuses on developing strategies to help with understanding English, and another course is directed at improving and refining your ability to express yourself.

The average LEAP class size is only 20 students. Small classes make it easier for you to build relationships with your instructors and classmates. You will also have lots of opportunities to practice your language skills, engage in discussions, and participate in interactive activities that enhance your fluency and confidence.

Student life at MRU

Mount Royal takes pride in its safe and welcoming campus community. As a LEAP student, you get full access to all campus services, including Recreation and Wellness Services. There's also the International Student Support Centre which provides a dedicated space where you can access immigration information, study, meet other students, and participate in social and cultural activities.
