Buying a Used Car

  • Buying a used car is similar to buying a new car, but you have to be more vigilant in finding out about the car's history. You'll have to consider the car's milage, accident history, repair history, etc.
  • Check for oil puddles under the car or where it was parked.
  • Check for rust and evidence of repairs.
  • Does it need new brakes, a new muffler or clutch? Have these parts been replaced recently, or are they all going to need replacing six months from now?
  • Buy from someone who obviously cares about their cars and takes good care of their vehicle.
  • Be sure that the car can and has passed emissions testing (LINK) or what it will need to be able to do it.
  • The seller should let you test drive it before you commit to buying it.
  • Contact the Ministry of Transportation in your province for information about buying or selling a used car, how to change a vehicle's ownership, etc.
  • If you are buying from a used car dealership, there are often financing options available.
  • If you are buying from an individual, they will generally require a certified cheque.
