Loyalist announces agreement with Lakeland College: Bachelor of Applied Environmental Management Degree (BAEM) Degree Available
Loyalist College Press Release
February 14, 2003 - An agreement between Loyalist College and Lakeland College in Alberta will allow Loyalist graduates to complete Lakeland's four-year Bachelor of Applied Environmental Management (BAEM) Degree while staying in the area.
Loyalist President Doug Auld announced the agreement at the January 9 meeting of the Board of Governors.
"We are very pleased to add this option to our range of choices for degree completion available to our graduates," said President Auld. "As we continue with our proposal to become a polytechnic institution, this arrangement fits our goals very nicely."
"Graduates of our three-year Environmental Technology program will add a few more business credits at Loyalist," explained Vice-President Academic Maureen Piercy. "After completing two four-month practicums, they will be eligible to graduate with a BAEM Degree from Lakeland. Practicums must be approved by Lakeland, but can be completed in Belleville or this area. The fact that these studies can be completed through Loyalist in four calendar years provides an excellent opportunity."
The program is available now for current Environmental students at Loyalist, and will be available for those beginning studies in September.
Aatos Lehtila, Dean of Applied Science and Computing, is very excited by this new and unique opportunity for Quinte area residents. "It is the only science-related degree that is available right here, right now, so students do not have to leave home. And the cost is much lower than that of any university science degree," he noted. He explained that the agreement is the result of over a year of negotiation and follows a pilot project involving a Loyalist staff member.
"The test worked perfectly, giving both Lakeland and Loyalist an opportunity to see the agreement in action," commented Dean Lehtila. "Because of the pilot project, it became clear that flexibility would be important, and because of that, four different options are possible for completing the degree. The great thing about this degree offering is that it has been proven. Lakeland College has graduates who are already working in industry, proving the acceptance of the credential."
Lakeland graduates are employed in diverse fields in consulting, government and industry. Graduates of the BAEM program are well-suited for jobs in land reclamation, site investigation, compliance, auditing, pulp and paper, forestry, mining and many other areas.
