Description: Sociology is the scientific study of social behaviour - the study of the determinants, processes and consequences of human relationships. Specifically, sociologists may study social institutions like law, education and religion; or the behaviours associated with prison life, sex-roles, patterns of dating and marriage, and media influence. Social concerns like crime and delinquency, poverty, racial and ethnic conflict also fall within the scope of Sociology. By using a variety of research methods, sociologists work to increase our knowledge about people in society and thereby improve social conditions and the general quality of life. Taking Sociology courses contributes to your education by increasing your ability to understand the world you live in and to cope with the various situations you will experience during your lifetime.

A Sociology concentration provides the appropriate background that may lead to careers in the following fields: criminal justice, gerontology, health-care organization, human rights, labour organization, law enforcement, human resources, media analysis, multiculturalism, rehabilitation, social planning, social research, social welfare, teaching, volunteer organization.
