Requirements for International Students
UBC welcomes applications from well qualified international applicants at recognized schools, colleges, and universities. Secondary school applicants must have graduated from a university preparatory program at a senior secondary school. Admission average is calculated on final year academic courses/exams unless following the American school system. Applicants must meet both general and specific program requirements. Since UBC receives many more applications than it can accept, admission is competitive. In general, academic achievement forms the basis of evaluation, although additional criteria may be considered for secondary school applicants who have studied outside Canada for at least one year before applying. For further details, see our website. Generous first year credit is available for students with high achievement in IB, AP, A level, and French Baccalaureate programs.
UBC may give provisional offers of early admission if a student's secondary school sends an official transcript showing the student's final grades for all courses completed and interim or predicted senior level courses currently in progress. For example, mock 'A' levels, predicted International Baccalaureate Higher Level grades, or December or spring semester grades for senior secondary school students are acceptable. Conditional offers of admission are subject to satisfactory completion of secondary schools graduation requirements and maintenance of the current program average requirement. Applicants following the American school curriculum must submit a SAT result (composite minimum 1,700) or ACT (minimum 26) plus writing (minimum 10).
English is the language of instruction at UBC. All applicants regardless of first language or citizenship status must demonstrate English language competency prior to admission. Where standard English tests are required, the minimum scores on TOEFL tests are computer based, 22 on each section and 4.0 on the essay and Internet based, 21 (reading and listening), and 20 (writing and speaking) with an overall score of 86/120. Applications for UBC are due January 31 and must be submitted online. We strongly encourage you to apply early and submit the necessary documents as soon as they are available. UBC will begin considering you for admission as early as the necessary documents arrive.
If you are currently attending a British Columbia high school and apply to UBC before the January 31 application deadline, you will be asked to self report your grades in March/April. If you do this, you will receive an immediate online admission decision.
If you are currently attending an Ontario secondary school and are applying to other universities via the Ontario University Application Centre, you will receive an OUAC number. Please include this on the UBC application form. This will authorize electronic release of your grades to UBC so there is no need to mail in paper transcripts. If you do not have an OUAC number, please ask your school to send your paper transcripts to UBC.
If you are currently attending a secondary school in another Canadian province or territory, have your school send in transcripts in March or April.
