A Working Student… A Life Changing Experience

My name is Victor Jimenez. I am an International Student Advisor at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta and this is my story… I remember when I came to Canada in 2003 as an International Student. I can truly say it was the most amazing experience I have had in my life.

I selected Canada as my destination of study because of its world class education and multicultural society. I was also very excited about having the opportunity to work in a land of possibilities. International students can work during their studies, giving them the opportunity to earn money and gain work experience. Another advantage is that after graduating, they might obtain a post-graduation work permit.

These opportunities are fantastic for students. They not only will be able to earn some extra money, but they will also gain something that in my opinion is more valuable than money: Canadian work experience!

International students are more likely to be successful in their job hunt after graduation if they have some good work experience while they were at school. Sometimes international students do not know what career they want. Work experience is a perfect way to sample all the career options that are available.

One of the most important reasons students should work while they study is because work experience gently introduces them to the world of work. Working while you study gives you a very good idea of the skills you will need to thrive in the workplace.

I can truly say that coming to study and work in Canada changed my life. Coming as an international student was the greatest decision I have ever taken. This wonderful country has not only given me world class education, but many unforgettable experiences that will live with me forever.
