Moving to Canada: Preparing for an Exciting Education

Save

Choosing a university is an exciting time. Algoma University offers a variety of different and unique programs and services to make the move to Canada easier and stress-free.

Our international students are given adequate support to transition from their home country to that of Canada, as soon as they accept their offer of admission! The Student Ambassador Program pairs international students with upper year students. This gives international students the opportunity to ask their mentor questions about the University, staff, and faculty, before and after arrival.

International students are encouraged to venture to Canada two weeks before their intended arrival to participate in the unique, one-of-a-kind Summer Study program. The program places students in homestay so they can develop lasting and meaningful relationships with a Canadian family. In Summer Study, students also meet other international students, become actively integrated into campus events and community activities, and become confident and comfortable in their new home and school before beginning classes.

After participating in the Summer Study program, international students can participate in Frosh Week. Frosh week operates as a series of fun and exciting icebreakers, which further helps introduce new students to university life, meet new friends, and learn about the city. International students will also be able to take part in a variety of sessions about how to manage finances, study, take notes, and survive exam season.

If our students are feeling homesick, there are a variety of cultural events held on campus. Events like J-Night, K-Night, and Brazilian Night feature the food, clothing, customs, and culture of that given ethnic group, and allow students from that country to share their way of life with those at the University, and the broader community.
