Studying internationally, while a great opportunity, can require a lot of preparation. It is important to keep these things in mind when applying to your dream universities.

For one, it is key to remember that countries require you to state how long you will be in their country. Many countries require that you have a study permit. It is important to apply for your study permit early as it can take up to 3 months to process.

You may apply for your study permit through your prospective school’s country embassy, consulate, or high commission in your native country. The University of Waterloo has a helpful web page detailing all the steps necessary in obtaining a study permit.

If English is not your native language and you intend to go to university in an English-speaking country, you may be required to submit English language test scores.

As lectures will primarily be taught in English, these test scores are their indication that you will understand your coursework and succeed in your education. Check with your prospective university to see what scores they require. The University of Waterloo website lists required test scores, as well as alternates for those whose scores don’t quite meet requirements.

Make sure you keep an eye on the calendar, too. You wouldn’t want to miss a deadline!

And of course, remember: your grades are important. Check program requirements to see if your marks are up to the university’s standards.

With all of this in mind, good luck with your adventures in university!
