Each year, over 100,000 international students move to Canada to pursue their dreams of post-secondary education. Canada is an ideal destination, as it consistently ranks as one of the best countries in the world for quality of life. At Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Vancouver Campus (FDU), over three hundred new international students arrive each year to pursue their bachelor degree or master degree studies. There are three intakes per year at FDU and students from over 60 countries make up the diverse student body.

There are many benefits to moving to Canada for school, including experiencing a new culture, making friends from other parts of the world, proving that you are self-sufficient, enhancing your educational experience, and working in Canada. However, moving overseas can be a challenging time for some students. You are exposed to a new environment, culture, language, economy, food, currency, and transportation system, to name a few.

Fortunately, Fairleigh Dickinson University takes multiple steps to help new international students acclimate to living in Canada and studying at a new school. Prior to arriving in Canada, FDU provides students with an innovative Online Orientation Meeting. Through an online web portal, students can meet staff members face-to-face. At the meeting, FDU provides guidance on packing for living in Canada, arriving at the airport, managing immigration documents, accessing housing, preparing for classes, and much more. Through the online orientation, students can ask questions, that are answered live by FDU staff members.

Upon arriving in Canada, FDU students attend a five-day orientation. During Orientation, students take a free bus tour of Vancouver, they meet a Vancouver Police officer regarding safety in Vancouver, they meet their professors and current students, and they are provided with a thorough overview on how to succeed in university.

Moving to a new country can be difficult for anyone, however FDU strives to prepare international students for the challenges they will face, resulting in successful students who enjoy the benefits of moving to Canada.
