Description:Capilano University is recognized nation-wide as one of Canada's top jazz training institutions. We offer a two-year diploma and a four-year Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies. The Jazz Studies diploma constitutes the first two years of the four-year degree. Students who complete the Jazz Studies Diploma and meet admission requirements can continue to year three of the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree and will chose one of two degree streams: Bachelor of Music and Jazz Studies-Performance/Composition Program, or Bachelor of Music and Jazz Studies-Education Program.

The program focuses on jazz performance and composition in balance with other musical traditions and academic breadth electives to provide an enriched music education. For those who wish to pursue music as self-employed professionals, teach music in the schools, or continue their musical development at the graduate level, it is a unique and attractive option. Capilano Jazz Studies graduates have an excellent record of national and international success as performers and composers and as teachers at primary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.

Admission Requirements

  •  Grade12 English 

Applicants are required to have British Columbia secondary school graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent OR Mature Student status.

Test Scores:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 560] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 83] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70]

Capilano English Language Requirement for students whose primary language is not English: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): paper=560, internet=83, or English Language Assessment (ELA)=145, or International English Language Testing System (Academic IELTS)=6.5 overall, and no one score less than 6, or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL)=70, or Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)=56 or Capilano University EAP 100 and 101 with a minimum B+ grade in each course.

Additional Admission Requirements:
    Applicants are required to attend Interview which may include performance components. For transfer students: in addition to the above, an audition process to determine program placement. The audition may include evaluation of theory, keyboard skills, technique, improvisation, and aural skills.
