Description:Interact daily with a menagerie of small animals and gain experience with livestock, wildlife and birds as a veterinary technician, assisting veterinarians and veterinary scientists. The AHT program gives you the skills to work in diagnostic testing, radiography, medical procedures, office protocol, animal nursing, anesthesia, and surgical assistance.

Although most graduates are employed in private veterinary practices, positions may be obtained in the emerging biotechnical fields, animal shelters, zoological parks and other animal oriented areas in the public and private sectors.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
  •  Grade11 Mathematics 
  •  Grade11 Biology 
  •  Grade11 Chemistry 
  •  Grade12 English 
  •  Grade12 Science 
A minimum grade of C+ in each of the above prerequisites is required. Applicants must provide evidence of orientation to a veterinary practice (signature of veterinarian is required). It is required that applicants complete a minimum of two weeks (80 hours) working, volunteering, or observing in a veterinary clinic.
Application Notes : Note: Applicants should have a sound secondary school background and an interest in working with and caring for animals. This includes such areas as farms, SPCA, wildlife refuges or any other animal oriented facility. Students should have a desire to develop manual and technical skills. A minimum of 80 hours of practical experience in a veterinary facility is essential for admission to the AHT program. Consultation with practicing RVTs is strongly advised.
