Courses

Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with virtual learning activities. Indigenous philosophies, approaches, and methodologies in education emphasize holistic learning, positioning oneself in relation to Indigenous knowledge and experiences, learning through connection to land, and learning from Elders, knowledge holders, and community relationships. Students experience reflective learning activities, multimedia resources, place-based learning, and guest presentations that will empower them to braid Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies into their teaching practice.

A reflective and empowered educator draws on their own teaching values and the wisdom of their professional learning community to grow their teaching. In this culminating, reflective, and collaborative course, students explore and practice new teaching approaches as they strive to enhance their teaching praxis.

Providing learners with a choice to immerse themselves in a topic or project of their choosing sparks their natural curiosity and desire to learn. Students undertake an immersive and independent project of their choice. Through independent work supported by learning and teaching specialists, learners define their project scope, establish a work plan, and complete their project. Projects may include research, curriculum renewal, new teaching strategy implementation, resource guide development, or contribution to an ongoing teaching and learning project.

Fees for part-time programs are charged on a course-by-course basis and are published on each individual course page. For questions related to fees, please call the Registrar's Office at 613-727-0002.

Graduation Fee

Once you have completed all the courses in the program, it is the responsibility of the student to complete a credential application. A graduation fee is charged when the application is submitted. After your credential application has been approved, you will be invited to Convocation.

Additional program related expenses include:

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must satisfy both College Eligibility and Program Eligibility requirements.

College Eligibility
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. OR
  • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate; OR
  • General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee will be charged.

Program Eligibility

The following requirement is recommended to ensure success in the program:

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
  • It is recommended applicants with international transcripts have the following IELTS or TOEFL scores to ensure success: IELTS-International English Language Testing Service (Academic) Overall band of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT) Overall 80, with a minimum of 20 in each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20; OR Duolingo English Test (DET) Overall 105, minimums of 105 in Literacy and 85 in Production.

Note: TTA5506 - Teaching Practicum - all specified prerequisites and one elective are requirements for successful completion of the course.

The Academic Planner outlines successfully completed courses to date, as well as courses that need to be completed in order to meet graduation requirements.
