Child and Youth Worker (Advanced)

School: Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology
Faculty: School of Community & Urban Studies
Degree: Diploma
Field of Study: Youth Services/Administration
Description: Child and youth workers are specialists in facilitating change in children and youth who are experiencing a range of social, emotional, family, or behavioural challenges in their lives. Children and youth respond to the impact of change, stress, loss, poverty, violence, abuse, and neglect with a range of emotions and behaviours, including confusion, anger, withdrawal, aggression, hopelessness, violence, and suicide. Child and youth workers advocate for and guide children and youth through their daily lives, teach social and life skills, support efforts to manage behaviour, and engage in counselling to facilitate better understanding and change.

Employment for child and youth workers may be in the following settings: residential treatment centres, mental health clinics, community centres, child welfare services, open and closed custody facilities, schools, and group homes. Many of the employment positions require the graduate to work shifts and weekends. Students participate in field placements, including one with adolescent clients and one in a residential setting. The option to fast-track is available third year.
