Mechanical Techniques - Precision Machining

Description: This one-year certificate program is designed to train students in the operation of a variety of precision metal removal tools, from small hand tools to machine tools such as; drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and grinders. Students learn basic hand skills including general machining techniques required to set up and operate all standard machine tools for the manufacturing of parts from blueprint specifications. Students are also introduced to CAD - Computer Aided Drafting, CNC - Computerized Numerical Control Machining. During Level 03, students are on work placement in industry while attending the College two days a week. (While every effort is made to place students, space is determined by industry representatives and availability).

Graduates who decide to further their education are allowed direct entry into the fourth level of the Mechanical Technician - Toolmaking program. By writing the appropriate exemption tests, graduates of this program may be exempted from the General Machinist basic and intermediate in-school training apprenticeship, upon consideration by and at the discretion of, the employer and the local Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities Apprenticeship Division.

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 English
  • Grade 11 Mathematics
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent) and Mathematics Grade 11 (MCF3M or a mathematics with a similar content). Applicants may also have an Academic and Career Entrance Certificate, a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program).
