| Description: |
For centuries the concept of 'modernity' has provoked challenging questions and heated controversies. Indeed, many now define themselves as 'post-modernists'. But what is the actual nature of modernity? Why is Western society configured as it is today? One way to gain insight is to study modernity's origins and development in European culture from the 16th to the early 19th centuries.
Against a background of social and economic evolution, Early Modern Studies examines factors such as the emergence of a new conception of the self and a critically reasoning public; the scientific revolution and changing perceptions of nature; changing perceptions of gender and institutional authority; changing concepts of morality and history; and the development of new aesthetic theories.
