Anthropology

School: Mount Allison University
Faculty: Faculty of Arts
Degree: Bachelor ; Honours
Field of Study: Anthropology
Description: Anthropology is the study of humans across space and time. It is essentially cross cultural, and attempts to understand the way of life of other peoples across the world, how they have attempted to solve pan human problems, food, shelter, and repopulation; and what worlds of meaning and explanation they have created. It is a comparative discipline seeking similarities and differences between societies and environments. Its study leads to a heightened awareness of the importance of culture and a sensitivity to cultural differences.

The Honours degree, either thesis-based or course-based, is required for graduate school. In the absence of this a student would need to complete a qualifying year. The thesis- based option would be particularly advantageous for the student thinking about graduate studies in anthropology as such studies usually also involve writing a thesis. Those students who have done an Honours thesis and go on to graduate school find it an excellent preparation for this undertaking.
