| Description: |
Medical Laboratory Technologists are Canada's fourth largest group of health care professionals. The practice of modern medicine would be impossible without tests performed in a clinical laboratory. Clinical laboratory personnel provide the data necessary to aid in the diagnosis of disease and the evaluation of available treatment options. Seventy percent of physicians' treatments are based on the results of laboratory tests. The clinical laboratory is divided into five general areas: Hematology - blood and blood disorders including coagulopathies. Transfusion Science Medicine, preparation and transfusion of blood and blood products. Biochemistry - determination of the presence, absence or quantity of chemical substances in body fluids. Microbiology – detection of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other pathogens. Pathology - gross dissection and preparation of body fluids and tissues for microscopy.
