International Language Academy School: Athol Murray College of Notre Dame Degree: Certificate Field of Study: English as a Second Language Description: The International Language Academy offers an intensive ESL program for students requiring English language upgrading for entry into mainstream ESL or English programs in high schools in Canada and/or the United States. The Academy program has an integrated curriculum where students spend time in ESL classes, but also participate in other academic, arts and sports classes with mainstream students. Academy students are encouraged to participate in the College sports programs and the different clubs offered each year. Students are placed in residence based on their gender, age and grade appropriate groupings. Every effort is made to ensure different nationalities reside in each room. It is the College’s belief that language development is enhanced through continuous interaction with students whose first language is English. Extracurricular involvement is imperative if students are to truly develop their language skills. The College has a strong athletic program, in particular hockey, yet numerous other sports, art, drama, choral and multi-media programs are offered each year.
