| Description: |
The world is becoming more diverse and complex, and our assumptions about it are constantly challenged. The Contemporary Studies Programme tries to make sense of today's world as a whole by considering the important writers, thinkers and artists of the 19th and 20th century, both on their own terms and in relation to some of the fundamental themes of our time.
The programme offers a broad overview of contemporary European and North American culture and encourages students to relate the various aspects of contemporary thought to one another, and to develop independent insights into the nature of today's world. What is the place and role of the tradition in contemporary culture? What is the nature of the relationship between science, culture and politics today? What do terms such as 'progress', 'truth', or 'humanity' mean to us? How do we relate to others with whom we co-exist? These are a few of the questions we examine in Contemporary Studies.
