History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture

School: University of Alberta
Faculty: Faculty of Arts
Degree: Bachelor ; Honours
Field of Study: Art History, Criticism and Conservation
Description: The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree provides more extensive study in subjects within the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture than the regular BA degree. Honours students begin by taking introductory (100- and 200-level courses) designed to equip them with the skills of close visual analysis and an ability both to understand and recognize the visual culture of diverse historical periods. These courses range from the early modern to the modern and contemporary periods. More advanced (300- and 400-level) courses concentrate on specific themes and visual media: the Bauhaus; representations of the early modern body; the arts and crafts & art nouveau movements; artists and institutions; modern Spanish painting; historical and topographical Chinese painting; sustainable design; consumer culture; Japanese prints; murals and prints in modern Mexico; constructions of genius and artistic identity; and contemporary body art. At this level, students learn how to produce scholarly essays, undertake original research, present their ideas orally, and engage critically with various art-historical methods.
