Building Engineering

School: Concordia University
Faculty: Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science
Degree: Bachelor ; Co-op
Field of Study: Construction Engineering
Description: Building Engineering involves all aspects in the life cycle of enclosed built facilities (conception, planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation), whether commercial, residential, industrial or institutional. The building engineer considers the design of the complete building: its structural properties, energy analysis, the materials to be used, the choice of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, lighting requirements and electrical power requirements. The ultimate goal is to provide a comfortable indoor environment, with respect to the thermal, visual and acoustic comfort, while following a sustainable design approach.

In the Co-op program, students may gather data on site and return to the office for further study and research. They may also assist in preparing plans for the electrical and plumbing systems. During final work terms students may conduct field surveys, assist in preparing contract documents, prepare and track change orders, prepare preliminary drafts, and conduct site visits to monitor and document progress on various projects.
