Communication studies analyze the form and context of the mass media, and their effect on individual perceptions and society. This involves students in the study of social, cultural, political, and economic institutions, practices, and artifacts. Required areas of study include communications theory, history, research methods, cultural studies, and political economy. Majors in this field may also elect courses in cinema studies, news media analysis, and video, film, and sound production.
Students may find employment in communication strategy and management, television, film and video planning, production, and post-production; radio and print journalism; policy analysis for media and government agencies; opinion research; public relations; advertising; and teaching and research.
