Anthropology is a science focused on human beings, and it studies a range of societies from a holistic and comparative perspective. Our programs, which specialize in the sub-discipline of social and cultural anthropology, provide the tools needed to critically analyze and to understand cultures and societies of the contemporary world. Our programs give students a better understanding of cultural changes and intercultural relations in the context of globalization, migration, multiculturalism, technological revolutions and other phenomena. With their focus on locally appropriate solutions, anthropologists provide important input to help resolve social, political, economic and environmental problems. Anthropology is perhaps most recognized for its ethnographic approach and its use of participant observation, which requires long-term, detailed fieldwork among the people being studied.
This program provides students with the tools they need to analyze and understand the vast range of human societies throughout the world. In the process, students learn to apply anthropology's time-honoured cross-cultural, holistic perspective to understand cultural change, globalization and development. Anthropologists also help craft solutions for contemporary social and environmental issues. Emphasis is placed on the unique perspective of anthropological ethnographic research - the long-term, detailed study of societies.
