The main purpose of the Mathematics program is to allow students to concentrate their studies in mathematics to a greater extent than is possible under the general program. There is a great deal of flexibility, and each student designs his or her own program in consultation with an advisor from the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. This flexibility allows students to combine the study of mathematics with the study of a related discipline such as physics or statistics.
There is also a secondary purpose, and that is to provide a bridge to some of the higher level honors courses. There are students whose interest and abilities in Mathematics are not apparent until they have taken a year or more of Mathematics. For such students, it is sometimes difficult to enroll in an honors program, and the specialization program accommodates them to some extent.
Admission to the first year of an Honors program requires a minimum overall application average of 80% on the five required subjects with the approval of the Faculty Office and the Department concerned. A request for this privilege should be made on the Application for Admission.
