Notes for Canadian Students
The University offers a number of merit based awards for undergraduates including Major Entrance Scholarships for students who enter UBC from secondary school. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must be nominated by their secondary school. In addition to Major Entrance Scholarships, the University provides a number of other substantial entrance awards to students beginning studies in such disciplines as engineering, forestry, agriculture, and music.
Another merit based award, the President's Entrance Scholarship (PES), recognizes students who have achieved academic excellence in secondary school. Through this program, students who attain a final admission average with a 95% or higher receive a $4,000.00 award and a guaranteed place in UBC housing, 90% or higher receive a $2,000.00 award and a guaranteed place in UBC housing, and 86% or higher receive a $500.00 award.
College/university transfer students are eligible for the Trek Excellence Scholarship of up to $2,000.00. Students are required to have a final GPA of 3.8 on at least 27 transferable credit hours.
On behalf of individual University departments, the Faculty of Graduate Studies administers merit based scholarships, fellowships, and prizes available to domestic and international post-graduate students.
The UBC Board of Governors has a policy that no domestic student who is otherwise qualified should be prevented from attending UBC for financial reasons alone. (Domestic students include Canadian citizens and permanent residents.)

Notes for International Students
Need based funding for international students is limited. Some merit based awards are available, which require no application. These are generally modest ($500.00 to $4,000.00) and cannot be relied on for tuition or living costs. International students are eligible to apply for awards based on academic performance, for which the source of funds is the University operating budget, annual gifts, or income from endowments management. However, competition for these awards is keen and the monetary value of such awards generally covers only a portion of the full cost of study of one year at UBC.
International students are eligible for two major scholarships, the International Leader of Tomorrow Award and the Humanities Award. These awards recognize international students of outstanding merit, leadership potential, or noteworthy endeavour, together with demonstrated financial need. Application for the scholarship is by nomination only for which the closing date is February 28. Full details are available on the Web site.
International students who require financial support to attend UBC should arrange this support prior to their arrival in Canada.
United States citizens or nationals are eligible to apply for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford loans to attend UBC. Further details about these US programs may be obtained through the UBC Awards and Financial Aid Office. UBC's school code issued by the US Department of Education is 008369.
