Profile
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public university founded in 1908 with an international reputation for teaching and leading edge research, and consistently ranked among the world's top 40 universities. UBC's innovative academic programs and award winning faculty attract outstanding students from around the world. UBC has two major campuses: UBC’s Vancouver campus, surrounded by forest, mountains, and ocean, just 12 kilometres from downtown Vancouver (one of the world's most beautiful cities and host of the 2010 Winter Olympics); and UBC’s Okanagan campus, located in beautiful, lakeside, Kelowna, British Columbia. Students at both campuses can enjoy year round outdoor activities at nearby beaches, parks, and world class ski resorts. UBC offers a superb education in outstanding natural surroundings.
Areas of Expertise
UBC is a broadly based comprehensive university providing a wide range of undergraduate, post-graduate, and professional programs through 18 faculties and 13 schools at two principal campuses. The University's teaching faculty is regularly recognized with national and international awards, and prizes for their teaching, research, and community service. Dr. Brett Findlay of the UBC Biotechnology Lab (an outstanding research unit established in 1987 by UBC professor and 1993 Nobel Prize winner, Michael Smith) has been awarded US $9 million as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative. Faculty members have also earned UBC Killam Research Prizes, Medical Research Council of Canada Scientists awards, and gold medals from the Science Council of British Columbia. UBC faculty participate in each of the Canadian government's Networks of Centres of Excellence programs and receive more than $485 million annually in research grants and contracts. In 2006, Nobel laureate Dr Carl Wieman joined the UBC Science faculty and is leading a major science teaching initiative.

UBC's library comprises 22 branches and service divisions, including three that serve five teaching and research hospitals. All libraries are connected to online catalogue services. A number of industry related research centres and organizations are located on-campus, including Tri-University Meson Facility (TRIUMF), one of the world's largest national accelerator facilities for research in subatomic physics. UBC also possesses the Museum of Anthropology, Canada's largest teaching museum.
