Biophysics is a young, exciting, and interdisciplinary science in which challenging biological problems are tackled using the techniques and concepts of physics. Like physics, it is an exact science; like biology, it attempts to find order in the apparent chaos exhibited by living systems. Many areas of biophysics have important implications for human health; examples include the probing of molecular structure in muscle by using x-ray diffraction, and the study of molecular dynamics in cell membranes by nuclear magnetic resonance.
The program emphasizes the physics of biological systems. It provides an excellent background for careers in the expanding interdisciplinary research laboratories of government and industry. Completion of the program at an appropriate level will qualify a student to pursue post-graduate studies in biophysics and certain areas of physics. Students choosing the Co-op option will complete their degree in five years.
