| Description: |
The study of philosophy involves the systematic investigation of the most fundamental questions a person asks, such as: “How should I live?”, “What can I know?”, “Does God exist?”, “What rights and duties do I have?”, “What makes a society just?”. Studying philosophy not only bestows insight into questions like these but also develops skills of analysis, argumentation, and clear expression. Many areas of study were born out of philosophical discussion, including physics, mathematics, economics, psychology, biology, and economics. The Department of Philosophy offers courses that provide thoughtful inquiry into contemporary issues, as well as courses in the history of philosophy that convey the historical background of these issues.
Career ideas for students interested in Philosophy include public servant, environmentalist, critic, clergy, diplomat, editor, public administrator, research assistant, ethics consultant, journalist, teacher, legislative assistant, film maker, lawyer, community planner, and graphic designer.
