| Description: |
Our program focuses on cellular chemistry and examines how biological systems work. First-year courses give you a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics before you start to specialize in biochemistry in second year. Our extensive biology and chemistry facilities and our Biochemistry Lab — outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment — provides the tools for you to put theory into practice. In your final year, you will do your own research project in a faculty member's research laboratory.
Many areas of everyday life owe their development or even existence to biochemists: medical products and diagnostics, new food and its safety, crop improvement, cosmetics and forensic science. As a result, biochemists work in a variety of fields — in industry, hospitals, agriculture, research institutes and education. York's biochemistry program is excellent preparation for medical school.
