With both the B.A. and B.Mus., you receive a thorough musical training in which personalized instruction in your chosen instrument is reinforced and enriched by courses in music theory, ear training, history, and literature, and participation in performing ensembles. The music curriculum enables you to cultivate areas of music that interest you most-performance, history, theory, sound design and recording, or composition.
You can choose the more general approach offered by the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or pursue studies in more depth with the Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.). The main difference between the programs is that the B.A. requires a minimum of 15 music classes and the B.Mus. requires a minimum of 30 Music courses. Either degree program may serve as foundation for a combined degree in music education, a particular strength of the University of Lethbridge; however, careful consideration should be given to the choice of combined degree options. The B.Mus./B.Ed. provides the strongest background in music. Individuals planning a career as a music specialist (i.e., primarily teaching music) at either the elementary or the secondary levels are advised to take this route. Students considering a more generalist career (e.g., grade 4 classroom teacher) should consider the B.A./B.Ed.
