Police Foundations was a joint initiative between the Police Learning System Advisory Committee and the Ministry of Education and Training to establish minimum entrance standards for police services in Ontario. The program prepares students for employment opportunities and career success at all levels of policing and related jurisdictions and justice professions. Graduates will possess the required knowledge and skills to meet the Ontario Constable Selection Standards.
The Police Foundations program consists of four semesters, each consisting of seven or eight courses. The first year of the Police Foundations program introduces students to the generic issues confronting the policing profession and more generally the Canadian Criminal Justice System, including issues such as: personal / professional communications, interpersonal / group dynamics, First Nations and fitness and lifestyle management. The second year provides specific courses that focus directly on the skills and knowledge required to perform policing duties, including: Ethics, Investigation Techniques, Police Powers, Community Policing and Traffic Management. Please note that a detailed description of each course is included in the following program outline.
These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
