| Description: |
This program provides students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to organize and maintain a safe, and stimulating learning environment that ensures the total development of the young child. The social, emotional, physical, cognitive and creative growth of the child are examined through academic studies as well as practical experiences.
Students should consider the fairly strenuous demands of keeping up with young children (at times lifting or carrying them) as well as the need to feel comfortable and at ease when working with young children. To meet the individual child's needs, students must acquire knowledge in curriculum planning and teaching methods. The program requires students' active involvement thus developing self-awareness, communication skills, sensitivity, and interpersonal skills.
Fieldwork enables students to refine skills in ongoing practical settings both at the College and in the community. Students will be responsible for any expenses incurred during placement, such as transportation, meals, and accommodation.
Graduates must demonstrate a level of expertise which is consistent with provincial competencies.
