History is the study of the human past and historians study changes in human societies through the use of written documents and other relics of the past. In such a broad field of study subdivisions are important and historians may examine political, military, national, economic, religious, intellectual, social, or cultural history. Historians analyze the causes and consequences of change over time, and seek to expand our knowledge of our own experience through a deeper understanding of the past..
In fact, history provides excellent training for a wide range of careers including: teaching, the law, civil service, the heritage industry, and even information technology. Did you know that Robert Young, the founder and CEO of Red Hat Software, was a history major at the University of Toronto? – or that the CEO of Dell Computers likes to hire people from a variety of backgrounds? If you are thinking about a career in teaching, history is also recognized as a teachable subject and it is taught at almost every grade level.
