Human Geography

School: University of Alberta
Faculty: Faculty of Arts
Degree: Bachelor
Field of Study: Geography
Geography, Other
Description: The study of human geography focuses on the interface between people and the physical environment within which they operate. As a student of the new BA program you will have the opportunity to take courses that will provide you with a grounding in both the theoretical and policy issues faced by public and private agencies when they attempt to either monitor the impact of human activity on the environment or control or prevent negative impacts.

All levels of government employ human geographers. In the federal government, you might be employed by such agencies as the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation, or the Department of Regional Economic Expansion. At the provincial level you might find employment opportunities in the Provincial Planning Board, the Alberta Housing Corporation, the Department of Recreation, or the Department of Social Services and Community Health. There are also a variety of jobs available to human geographers within municipal government. In the City of Edmonton, for example, you might be employed by the Planning Department or the Parks and Recreation Department.
