Description: Math and Statistics at StFX - where students undertake an effective combination of studies that focus on both fields. Mathematics is the science of structure, order and relation. It deals with logical reasoning, quantitative calculation and, of course, statistics. Job opportunities for those with a background in Math and Statistics include work in insurance, banking, finance and market research. Recent employers of StFX Math and Statistics graduates include Statistics Canada, Canada Revenue Agency, banks, insurance companies, Shell, Nortel, IBM, Sobeys, and Atlantic Lottery Corporation, to name a few.

There are more than 50 degree choices within the department, and a student wishing to major in Mathematics and Statistics may do so either in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science, depending on the student’s interests and career objectives. The department offers considerable flexibility in how a student’s Mathematics and Statistics courses are complemented from a program leading to a B.Sc. or B.A. degree.

Prerequisites: These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

  • Grade 12 English
  • Grade 12 Precalculus
  • 2 of: Grade 12 Biology or Grade 12 Chemistry or Grade 12 Physics
  • Applicants must have the above prerequisite in addition to one other university preparatory course.

    For students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Math and/or Statistics, applicants need only have the English prerequisites, in addition to four other university preparatory courses.
