When you think about your future college life, you probably focus on what classes you should take, what you want your major to be, and what kind of academic load you can handle. But there’s a whole other side to the college experience outside of academics, and it can be just as important as picking the right classes! Getting involved on campus in different ways can help you meet people, make friends, form connections for your future career, and build your resume. At Algonquin College, we have several ways to help students get involved.

The AC Hub
Your first stop on your way to becoming more connected on campus should be the AC Hub. Located on the second floor of the Student Commons, this open, modern space is designed for collaboration. The AC Hub is not only a place to work independently or with a group for a class project, but it’s also a way to broaden your knowledge and expand your social circle by attending AC Hub “talks” and other social events.
Can’t make it to the main AC Hub? There’s a satellite location on the second floor of the C Building, and three mobile desks that change locations around campus to give students information on events and services. The AC Hub wants to help students expand their college experience beyond the classroom and help to make connections that will benefit them long after their time at Algonquin College is over.

Volunteering
Most college first years enter school with at least some volunteer experience since these opportunities are readily available in high school; however, the rate of volunteerism drops significantly for college students, as they become busy with a larger class load, campus jobs, and social events. According to CollegeBoard, “Volunteering can help you learn more about yourself and even put you on a path to your future career.” Volunteer work can help you build your network, get experience in your field, and feel better about yourself as you help others.
A specific service of the AC Hub is the volunteer database, which offers a wealth of information on ways that you can get involved and help others at the same time. Volunteering your time and resources is an excellent way to meet people and build your resume, all while doing some good in the world. You can check out the database for volunteer opportunities with a specific event, or you can look through on-going volunteer needs.

Co-Curricular Record
As you start to get involved and build a list of experiences, you will want to keep a record of your participation and accomplishments. As a student at Algonquin College, you have access to the Co-Curricular Record, a tool provided by the Employment Support Centre.
The Co-Curricular Record provides a place to catalog and verify your leadership and volunteer experiences, so when it comes time to apply for a job or a graduate program, you have all the information ready. Any excuse to add experiences to your resume is a good one so make sure you get out and get involved in the AC community!
