An Introduction to York University

Are you thinking of joining York University's inclusive, diverse campus community as an international student? Here are five reasons why York University is a great choice for international students.

1. Ongoing support for our international student community

York is a great place for international students. York International (YI) will be your home away from home during your time at York. YI provides our community of nearly 7,200+ international students with services and programs designed to ease your transition to life in Canada. This includes everything from pre-arrival online support workshops, to employment and immigration matters and a Global Peer Program to connect international students with domestic students.

2. Academic excellence and flexibility

At York, you can choose a unique degree path from over 200 programs. Dedicated to innovation and experiential learning, York students learn from established professors across all disciplines at their 25 Research Centres and Institutes. York also has several online learning options, making it easier for you to attend from wherever you are in the world.

The University has a full selection of academic programming for the current Fall Term, with undergraduate courses being taught through in-person, on-line and remote delivery. Careful planning has facilitated our ability to offer experiential in-person learning in a select number of courses, including labs, studios, and clinical placements.

Want to pursue Engineering but also love Literature? At York, you can choose from many flexible learning options, including pursuing a double major in different areas of interest across different Faculties. This means that students can design their own academic schedule, so that their degree is personalized to their career and personal interests.

3. A career-focused education

At York, you will benefit from experiential learning opportunities that will help you build a professional network and develop the practical skills needed to excel in the workplace anywhere in the world.

Career Education & Development helps you achieve your career goals by helping you with resumé and cover letter writing, creating and using LinkedIn, hosting job postings as well as career fairs, peer career educator sittings, employer recruitment sessions and workshops such as "Job Search and Networking Strategies." They also offer specific support and advice for international students.

4. Exciting, social student life

University can be a big place, so that's why York is one of the only universities in Canada that has the college system! This system makes a big university like York feel small and tight knit. It provides a unique student experience and makes international students feel at home. All undergraduates are assigned to a college as their "home base" to study, hang out and feel part of a close-knit group within the York community. During the pandemic, the Colleges have hosted hundreds of successful virtual events, including workshops, game and movie nights, networking events and panel discussions.

York's 300+ official student clubs such as the International Students' Association at York provide new students with the perfect chance to meet new friends and enjoy an extracurricular activity that suits their interests. You can also track your campus involvement on your York Co-Curricular Record, which is a great addition to any resumé!

5. Amazing location and top-rated facilities

Did you know that York has state-of-the-art, professional athletic facilities, eight undergraduate residences, seven libraries and York Lanes, the university's own shopping mall?

With two campuses located in central Toronto and two subway stops located on our Keele Campus, Canada's largest city is truly at your fingertips. Both campuses are accessible by bike, car, carpooling programs as well as multiple public transportation providers form the surrounding area including Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and much more! You can attend your morning lectures, hop onto the subway, explore Toronto, and be back on campus for an afternoon tutorial!
