We understand that applying to university as an international student can be an overwhelming process. We’re here to help! We’ve put together a few tips that can help you make the best of your application to York University.

  1. 1. English Proficiency Tests (IELTS & TOEFL)
  2. To gain admission to York, you must demonstrate language proficiency in your program's language of instruction. York accepts submissions from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) from international students. You may be exempt from submitting a TOEFL or IELTS result based on your academic background. You can see the requirements for specific programs, and possible exemptions, in our Language Proficiency Requirements webpage.

Interested in studying at York but don’t meet the English requirements? You may want to consider enrolling at the York University English Language Institute York University English Language Institute (YUELI). YUELI provides the highest quality English language instruction, serving more than 2,000 students from 50+ different countries every year. YUELI's programs include university academic preparation programs, summer language institutes and customized programs.

  3. 2. Admission Requirements
  4. Now that you’ve decided to apply to York and reviewed the English proficiency requirements, you can find admission requirements for your program of interest through the Programs of Study website. Be sure that you have completed or plan to meet these requirements before you apply.

  5. 3. Application Process
  6. Now it’s time to apply! It’s important to keep application deadlines in mind. After confirming that your program is accepting applications, and you know when you’d like to start your studies, you can apply to York in one of two ways: • Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) • Directly via the York University website

  7. 4. You’ve submitted your application – what’s next?
  8. Once you’ve submitted your application, you will receive an email containing your York Reference Number. This generally takes 5 to 7 business days, so don’t worry if you haven’t received anything right away! Once you receive your York Reference Number, you will gain access to MYFile, which is where you can upload your supporting documents, as well as find out your admission status and decision.

  9. 5. Preparing Your Supporting Documents.
  10. Get all your documents ready so that when your confirmation email arrives you’ll be prepared! You’ll need to collect your secondary school transcripts and/or transcripts from other previous educational institutions, your language proficiency results and other necessary documents that may be required by certain programs. If you have multiple transcripts, combine them into one PDF as it will make the process much easier when you upload them to MYFile. Unless it is requested, you do not need to submit any documents by mail.

Once this is completed, you can track the progress of your application on MyFile. It is your responsibility to ensure York receives all required supporting documentation and that it’s received prior to the specific deadline date for your program. The processing period takes approximately six to eight weeks and begins after all supporting documentation has been received by the Office of Admissions.

we wish you the best of luck on your application and we hope to see you on campus soon!
