Moving from your home to a completely different country can be a scary but exhilarating experience. Preparing yourself as much as possible beforehand for the experience of living abroad can help ensure a smooth transition into daily Canadian life once you have arrived. For Chikodili Odinakachukwu, an international Mechatronics Engineering student from Nigeria, one thing was for sure — "bring your winter coat!"

Chikodili was prepared for Canadian life — including our cold winters — because she did a lot of research beforehand when she decided to study abroad. The research she did helped shape her experiences when she came to Canada, and she passes along an important tip to those looking to do the same.

"It is really important to do your research on your location of interest. Familiarize yourself with some of the norms and activities of that location, and become more knowledgeable of the surroundings and locals of that region."

Like any new university student, Chikodili's experiences gave her the opportunity to learn more about our campus and life in Canada. She shares a part of her story of studying in Canada, where she feels she has learned even more about herself.

"Meeting new people and working on exciting projects every day is the best part of my experience at the university. I discover new aspects of myself every day, sides to myself I never knew I had, so it has been an interesting journey so far."

When it comes to meeting new people and adjusting to daily Canadian life, Chikodili credits being open-minded to new experiences for her smooth transition.

"Be yourself, and you will attract the right people. A growth mindset and an open perspective will differentiate you."

If you are looking to study in Canada, Chikodili has one piece of advice that she has learned while being an Ontario Tech student.

"Your experience ultimately depends on you. Be aware of your surroundings, the people around you, and places you will need like the grocery store. Most importantly, familiarize yourself with Google Maps. Equip yourself with these and be prepared for a terrific and memorable experience in Canada."
