The thought of coming to another country could be daunting, unfamiliar and stressful, especially if you're not sure where everything is and how to get there. How will you get to the grocery store? The local coffee shop? What if you want to explore downtown? No need to worry! There are many different and affordable transportation options while you're in university!

Bus passes

Many schools offer a bus pass included with their initial student fees. At Redeemer University College, each student receives a Presto bus pass which they can use across the city of Hamilton. There are a couple bus stops within walking distance of campus that will connect you to the rest of the city. It's helpful to pick up a bus map or download the bus transit app to your phone as you familiarize yourself with the system. Make sure to arrive at the bus stop early — sometimes buses can arrive a few minutes earlier than they are supposed to.

Taxis & Uber

There are also multiple taxi services in major Canadian cities. Taxis are safe and trusted throughout Canada. It's easy to find their number online. For example, taxi services in Hamilton can be found on the city website. Uber is another convenient and cost-effective option for transportation in Hamilton. After downloading their app and setting up an account on your phone, you can hire a driver to pick you up and bring you anywhere with the click of a button on your smartphone. This is a similar option to a taxi service, but less expensive.

Bike rides

Bicycles are another good way to get around if you don't have far to go. You can easily buy a used bicycle at a thrift store or get one inexpensively at a yard sale. This is a cheaper, speedier way to get around during the times of the year when it isn't snowing. Once winter comes, however, bicycles are not recommended, as Canada can be very cold. The ice and snow also makes the roads slippery and dangerous on a bike.

You can also walk there, too

Some universities are located in the downtown area of the city, which makes walking the best option you have! Redeemer has a large shopping area within a 20-minute walk, with access to many stores and restaurants. Take a look at Google Maps before planning your next outing!

Sign up for a school trip

Many universities also plan trips for students throughout the year. Take advantage of these day trips to get off campus and explore the best parts of Ontario! Experience Niagara Falls, ice skating in the winter, downtown Toronto and many more exciting ways to live in a culture different from your own.
