Preparing for Your Arrival in Toronto

Tips for a stress-free move to Canada.

There are many things to consider prior to starting your studies in Canada, including what you need to do before you even arrive!

At Ryerson, International Student Support provides new students with a helpful pre-arrival checklist that covers everything from securing accommodation to tips on what to pack (hint: don't forget warm clothes for winter!).

1. Apply for residence or find off-campus housing

It is highly recommended that you secure housing prior to arriving in Toronto. While private housing may be found in Toronto after arrival, housing suitable for students can be limited, particularly during the back-to-school period in late August and early September. Housing & Residence Life at Ryerson helps students navigate their available options.

2. Register for orientation

Attending orientation events will give you the chance to meet new people while learning about your new environment. It is a great opportunity to set yourself up for success!

3. Check your health coverage and travel insurance

Review your health coverage and purchase travel insurance to cover the time period from the date of your departure until you arrive at Ryerson.

4. Bring important documents

Ryerson provides incoming international students with a list of documents that they need to bring with them to Canada, including a valid passport or travel document and their Ryerson Letter of Acceptance for International Students (LAIS). Bringing copies of important documents, such as health records, is also highly recommended.

5. Pack essential items

Not sure what to pack? Ryerson's International Student Support suggests that you bring your prescription medication, things that remind you of home, as well as a mobile phone (an unlocked cellular phone will allow you to use most Canadian carriers). Don't forget you will also need a wardrobe that can accommodate all four seasons.
