You can write your English profiency CAEL test with Wilfrid Laurier University this summer!

As countries around the world respond to the coronavirus pandemic, the impact is affecting both students currently at university as well as students preparing to go to university in the fall. This includes the closure of English-language testing centres, making it difficult to write your English-proficiency test. At Laurier, we understand how challenging this can be for you, so we have created a new opportunity for you to write the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test at Laurier's campus in August 2020.

If you are academically eligible for your program, we will give you an offer of admission that is conditional on you meeting our English proficiency requirements. There are several ways you can meet this requirements, and one of them is writing the CAEL test at Laurier in August.

About the CAEL Initiative

The CAEL CE (Computer Edition) test measures the English language proficiency of students planning to study at Canadian universities and colleges. CAEL also offers a variety of free digital resources to help you prepare for the test, including a free online sample test.

Laurier will have two test dates in August 2020 when you can take the CAEL test. We will be providing details on the test dates, as well as information on accommodations, fees, resources for test preparation and support programming for you prior to the beginning of classes as it becomes available. You can stay up-to-date on the CAEL initiative through this webpage.

Laurier's Required CAEL Score

  • 70 overall.
  • 60 in each band.

After you complete the test, if you get the minimum score you will begin your undergraduate studies in your academic program. If your test score is lower than the minimum requirement, you will begin studying in the Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) Program. Studying in the LEAF Program will allow you to meet Laurier's English proficiency requirement and, once you complete Level 5 of the program, you will be able to start your undergraduate studies full time.

The CAEL test is one way for you to meet the English proficiency condition. You can also:
