Five Things to Do This Holiday Break

This article was written by Madelline Alvarenga Diaz, a Ryerson University student.

Oh, winter holidays! Just like the song suggests, it's the most wonderful time of the year. The smell of seasonal drinks from our favourite coffee shops, the sound of snow crunching under our boots and my personal favourite: Mariah Carey playing in every single store that we visit to buy our loved ones’ gifts.

This season brings so much joy, and it's full of the most fun, exciting activities. That being said, we thought what better way to get into the holiday spirit this year than by sharing a list of our favourite things to do during the holiday season!

1. A gingerbread decorating party with friends or family

Just like you see in the movies, this is the easiest way to start the holiday season right! You can get all the materials you need at your nearest grocery store, and all that’s left to do is call your friends and family to show off their creative skills and have a ton of fun. But the best part is – without a doubt – this activity brings together two things that we love the most: food and people we care about.

2. A hot chocolate and movies night

Let’s start with some classics to facilitate the holiday spirit: Home Alone and Miracle on 34th Street. Followed by hot chocolate, and for those of you who are a little bit extra - marshmallows and candy canes make for the best toppings, enjoy!

3. Visit your local Christmas market or winter festival

Many places worldwide celebrate the holidays by hosting public events such as tree lightings in popular city spots and even firework shows that bring out our inner child. It's the season to relax, rejuvenate and add some pictures to your Instagram grid. Don’t forget to smile for your photos!

4. Volunteer in your community

One of our favourite things to do is share and give back to our community. Join any club or group within your community that organizes small acts of kindness that mean a lot to those in need. It can be as simple as making a winter coat and blanket or donating whatever you can to a local charity. You could even go the extra mile to add a small letter of hope and kind words to make someone’s holiday truly special.

5. Work on your application to Ryerson University

While applications are open and offers are released on a rolling basis, February 1st is the guaranteed consideration date for Ryerson University applicants. Completed applications received by this date will receive equal consideration. If you’re an international student looking to apply to Ryerson University for fall 2022, the winter holiday break is the perfect time for you to work on your application and take advantage of all the extra time you have to perfect it!

This holiday, share happiness with everyone around you. Give back to your community, spend quality time with your loved ones and don't forget to have those playlists ready for the parties. Happy Holidays everyone!
