Getting Ready for the Canadian Winter

It's that time of the year again! Winter is finally here, and it's time to bundle up in layers. Whether you’re an international student in Canada or planning on arriving soon, here are some things you should keep in mind when preparing for the season.

Is this your first winter?

This may be your first winter in Canada, and it's exciting to see snow for the first time. You may have heard about how much it snows or how extreme the cold can get. However, the winter can be pretty fascinating too! It's so beautiful to experience the snowfall and you definitely don’t want to miss out on the events around the city celebrating the season.

Proper winter clothing

When deciding what to wear, having your closet packed with warm clothes is a must. Essentially a winter jacket, a pair of winter boots (yep, your sneakers will not do), scarves and mittens, and don't forget your hats! Always dress in layers and cover your nose and ears. Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can result in frostbite, so protecting yourself against the chilly weather is the most important thing to get through the season.

Get into the holiday spirit!

It's December, the exams are over, and it's time for students to get into the holiday spirit! For international students experiencing their first winter, there are many things to try. Start with simple activities like ice skating or snow tubing with friends. And if that's too much, how about building a snowman in your backyard?

During the holidays, the city holds winter events in public parks called winter wonderland. Take a stroll through these parks or the beautifully lit-up streets, and welcome Christmas.

Going out or staying in?

If you're not a big fan of the cold and love to stay at home when the temperature drops, don't worry, holidays are also the perfect time to relax and indulge in your favorite hobbies.

Taking a break after a busy semester is crucial for your mental health, so take this time to stay indoors, drink some hot chocolate, and embrace the beauty of freshly fallen snow from your windows.
