Description:The mission of the Department of Computing and Information Science is to provide excellent teaching to our students and to conduct research of the highest quality in specific areas within Computer Science, with an emphasis on major research programs with the support and participation of industry.

The Ph.D. in Computer Science provides students with the opportunity to do advanced research. During the three-year Ph.D. program you will complete a minimum of five courses, with additional courses as required to demonstrate adequate breadth across the field of computer science. You will also give two public seminars, successfully complete a qualifying exam, complete the research, write the dissertation, and successfully defend it at the final oral examination.

Admission Requirements


These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

    Admission to the PhD program will normally require a recognized master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline obtained with high academic standing. Students entering the program are expected to have demonstrated good research potential, an ability to critically evaluate experimental or theoretical results, and strong communication skills. Evidence for these are normally provided by scholarly publications during and immediately following the master's degree.

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7.5] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 90] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70]
    • Graduate Record Examination
    Application Notes : Students who have obtained a Master's degree from a university outside of Canada are encouraged to supply GRE scores.
