| Prerequisites Notes | Secondary school graduation with a minimum grade of C+ in English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12, or Adult Basic Education Advanced Level certificate with a minimum grade of C+ in English 090/091, (English 091 is preferred), or GED with a minimum of C+ in English 090/091, or assessment to acceptable level to determine eligibility.
Some students may qualify to earn additional credit through Prior Learning Assessment. Students requiring assessment must contact the Access Education department for an appointment.
Note: for employment with School Districts an assessment is not sufficient, you must have a minimum of GED plus Grade 12 English (a Grade 12 diploma is preferred).
General requirements: Students must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant requirement as outlined in the Program Guide under Admissions/Registration; good command of oral and written English; current immunization record and TB skin test; a signed COTR self-disclosure form; criminal record search (conviction of a criminal offense may influence an applicant's access to the program or to employment opportunities. | Description | College of the Rockies' (COTR) Early Childhood Education graduates are recognized as dedicated childcare professionals and leaders in the early childhood profession. The Early Childhood Education Certificate (ECE) in the Child, Youth, and Family Studies program offers students the essential knowledge and skills to provide high quality childcare and education for children from birth to age 12 in a variety of settings. Our program's philosophy is diverse and emphasizes a multi-model approach to support children's development.
Communication skills and interpersonal relationships between children, parents, and other professionals are essential skills taught within the ECE certificate program. Our curriculum also emphasizes important career skills, such as teamwork, critical thinking, and leadership. The theoretical and practical components of the program are integrated into each semester. The student has the benefit of acquiring the essential theory in the classroom and applying his/her new knowledge directly in approved settings throughout the year. Completion of a program in Early Childhood Education from COTR is the first step in becoming a Certified Early Childhood Educator in BC. | | |
