Prerequisites NotesThis program is restricted to people of First Nations ancestry. Camosun College considers any student who is a descendant of the indigenous peoples of what is now North America to be a First Nations student. This includes status and non-status Indians, Metis, Inuit and Native Americans living in Canada. Applicants must submit proof of a letter grade of “C+” or higher in English 12 or TPC 12 or assessment. For students interested in working in the school system, it is recommended to have Math 11 or Applications of Math 12 before entering the First Nations Family Support Worker Program. We strongly recommend you have basic computer literacy including experience with keyboarding and email skills prior to entering the program.

DescriptionThe Indigenous Family Support program provides students of Indigenous Ancestry* with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, awareness and values needed to work with Indigenous individuals and families in schools and communities. The program promotes awareness of Indigenous history and culture. It provides opportunities for eachstudent to reflect and develop self-awareness and pride as an Indigenous person.

Indigenous family support practitioners are prepared to support the development of healthy Aboriginal individuals, families and communities. Program graduates function interdependently as members of a support team under the direction and supervision of experienced professionals in health, education and/or human service settings.
