DescriptionFrench at UNBSJ. Saint John has strong historical links with French. On June 24, 1604 Samuel de Champlain named our river after Saint John the Baptist, whose feast is celebrated on that day, making Saint John one of the pioneering cities of "La Francophonie" (the French-speaking world). In keeping with the current emphasis on globalization, the French section of the Department of Humanities and Languages focuses on French language and culture as the gateway to the Francophone communities of Canada and the world beyond.

A student who wishes to major in French Communication and Culture will normally have completed 12 ch in French (FR 1203, 1204 and 2203, 2204) and have received a grade of C or above. A student who has successfully completed a school French Immersion program may begin a major in French Communication and Culture following completion of FR 1304 and FR 2304 with a grade of B or above.
