Co-op Experience

The co-op term provides you with an opportunity to integrate academic studies with related employment experience. We have a co-op placement policy* in the field of studies.

The co-op work experience could include positions in the following areas:
  • Administrator
  • Operations Assistant
  • Customer Service Representative
  • Office Coordinator
  • Sales Associate
* Students will be offered paid or unpaid entry-level positions related to their field of studies. The Career Services Department will provide full support to students on booking and preparing for interviews. It is the student’s responsibility to perform well during all interviews as well as during the full length of the co-op term. Placements are subject to availability and will vary based on the program, season and job market changes as well as the student’s English level and previous professional and academic experience.

The program comprises of 240 hours of classroom learning and another 240 hours of a Co-op placement which can be completed anywhere in Canada. In order to successfully complete the program, you will have to take the following modules:

The modules include:
1. Fundamentals of Business Communications

This module will help you develop and enhance your written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, time management skills and presentation techniques, to ensure success in any business environment. You will also learn to use Microsoft Office to help you operate more efficiently and be more productive.

2. Managing Financial Resources

This module’s aim is to provide you with an understanding of where and how to access sources of finance and the skills to use financial information for vital decision-making.

3. Organizations and Behavior

This module will give you an understanding of individual and group behavior in organizations and the ability to examine current theories and their application in managing workplace behavior.

4. Marketing Principles

This module aims to provide you with the necessary understanding and skills related to the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the marketing process.

5. Co-op Work Placement

At the end of your theoretical learning, you are required to complete 240 hours of a work placement in a suitable business environment. Appropriate business sectors for placement work include sales, marketing, retail, finance, accounting, not-for-profit, customer care and administration.

Please note that activities performed will vary depending on the work placement, however, the key responsibilities of each student will include being supervised by a placement host at all times, observing all workplace, school safety and security procedures, dressing appropriately for the experience, interacting with placement staff respectfully, courteously and enthusiastically, learning about the work environment and participating in the daily routine as required.

The work placement is part of students’ educational development. It enables theoretical learning in the classroom to be applied to practical learning situations and encourages the application of theory and knowledge in an appropriate context. Students will be sent for interviews to secure their placement and must complete their practicum and submit a placement report to be successfully considered a graduate.

  • Have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or be at least 18 years of age and pass the Wonderlic test.
For non-native English speakers:
  • Successful completion of TSoM EAP Level 2 or
  • Have the required IELTS 4.5 score or equivalent or
  • Pass the TSoM English Assessment

Computer Use Expectation

In order to successfully progress through your studies at Toronto School of Management (TSoM), it is recommended that you have access to a personal computer or laptop. TSoM offers access to computer labs on campus, but availability cannot be guaranteed and some program software may not be available on all open access computers.

You must successfully complete all nine modules to be awarded the TSoM Certificate In Business Essentials Co-Op.
The assessment of each module consists of:
  • 2 individual assignments or class tests: 25% each
  • final exam: 40%
  • contribution mark: 10%
Work Placement Report: Pass/Fail

 

If you do not pass the module, you can re-take the module when it is offered next and by paying a retake fee.

Upon completion of this program, you will be awarded a Certificate In Business Essentials Co-Op.
